I just had to hold down my 19lb infant daughter so that she could get three shots and one blood draw that took forever! The first tech couldn't find a vein in either of her sad, little bound off arms, and then the second tech couldn't find a vein in either arm either. She said she would just have to prick her heel, but at the last moment changed her mind, tried to find a vein in Lulu's arm again, and voila! It appeared. So blood was drawn from her wee, little arm, all the while she was screaming and trying to break free. And I had to be the asshole holding her arm straight and pinning the rest of her body against mine.
I know that all this stuff is necessary and is truly the lesser of two evils, but it breaks my heart to have to hold my daughter down for something scary and painful. And really, how else, besides scary and painful, could she possibly perceive getting shots or having blood drawn? She doesn't know why it's being done. I hope her next check up doesn't require so much poking of the baby with needles. That really sucks.
