We were cuddled up on the couch watching Dora, and I nodded off (can you blame me? I'd really like to punch Dora in her ridiculously wide-ass head. I cope by sleeping through it). Lu decided to take this opportunity to eat a crayon without being scolded for it. When I woke back up, my kid was looking at me innocently with a blue, drawn on goatee, and when she opened her mouth, I saw that her teeth, gums, and tongue were all blue, too. Awesome.
I took her up to the bathroom, scrubbed the hell out of her face, and brushed as much blue out of her mouth as I could. Good thing crayons are non-toxic. Come to think of it, this is probably why.
Anyway, today the crayon decided to make its exit. And while it was (obviously) no longer in its original, crayon shape, neither chewing, nor stomach acid, nor passing through and then out of the body of a two year old girl, could diminish that crayon's true blue color.
It was completely disgusting, as well as mildly impressive.
After living in the area for years, I finally managed to get my butt (and Joe's and Lucy's) down to the National Zoo. We saw many adorable animals (like PANDAS!), but got no pictures of them 'cause Miss Lu was in a mood. I did get decent pictures of her in leaves and on the big "ZOO" sign.
So that's something, I guess.
I just had to hold down my 19lb infant daughter so that she could get three shots and one blood draw that took forever! The first tech couldn't find a vein in either of her sad, little bound off arms, and then the second tech couldn't find a vein in either arm either. She said she would just have to prick her heel, but at the last moment changed her mind, tried to find a vein in Lulu's arm again, and voila! It appeared. So blood was drawn from her wee, little arm, all the while she was screaming and trying to break free. And I had to be the asshole holding her arm straight and pinning the rest of her body against mine.
I know that all this stuff is necessary and is truly the lesser of two evils, but it breaks my heart to have to hold my daughter down for something scary and painful. And really, how else, besides scary and painful, could she possibly perceive getting shots or having blood drawn? She doesn't know why it's being done. I hope her next check up doesn't require so much poking of the baby with needles. That really sucks.
And if you care to see her oh so daintily eating her birthday cupcake, you can see them here.
Weaning from the bottle to the cup has begun in earnest. I'd intended to start earlier. Much earlier, but ... you know. Anyway, now that her 1st birthday is fast approaching I decided that I needed to start the weaning process ASAP. Especially since I originally wanted her to be completely weaned by her birthday. I don't know that that's going to happen now, but I'd still like to have her well on her way to freedom from the baby bottle.
I see in both our near futures an intense battle and probably some tears.
We spent all day yesterday 'traveling.' Which means we spent all f-ing day in Atlanta. Here's Lucy making herself at home by spreading her toys all over the floor at one of the various gates.
And here's me exhausted! (And still hours away from a flight out of there.)
Tomorrow Joe and I are flying out to AZ to spend two weeks with my family. This, however, presented a problem since we were certainly not going to fly across country with our cats, and two weeks is far too long to just have someone come by daily and give them food. Our cats are needy, social creatures. They need to be petted and loved in addition to being fed. For these same reasons I wasn't crazy about boarding them.
So last weekend, while Joe's parents were here visiting, Joe's dad, Joe, offered to meet us halfway between our houses (over 180 miles - about 290kms - for each of us) and take our cats. How awesome is that?! I don't think many people volunteer to cross state lines just to pick up your cats. My family-in-law is the best.
Anyway, yesterday we gathered the kid and the cats, and headed out to Hazelton, PA.
It was a long drive and Lucy fell asleep for a while.
... and Lucy got to hang out with her Papa Joe and Auntie D for a bit.
We finally had to say good-bye to the kitties and head home. Now that Lucy is in a forward facing car seat, I can sneak a look at her from my visor mirror. I did so on the way home, and caught this:
