I just had to hold down my 19lb infant daughter so that she could get three shots and one blood draw that took forever! The first tech couldn't find a vein in either of her sad, little bound off arms, and then the second tech couldn't find a vein in either arm either. She said she would just have to prick her heel, but at the last moment changed her mind, tried to find a vein in Lulu's arm again, and voila! It appeared. So blood was drawn from her wee, little arm, all the while she was screaming and trying to break free. And I had to be the asshole holding her arm straight and pinning the rest of her body against mine.
I know that all this stuff is necessary and is truly the lesser of two evils, but it breaks my heart to have to hold my daughter down for something scary and painful. And really, how else, besides scary and painful, could she possibly perceive getting shots or having blood drawn? She doesn't know why it's being done. I hope her next check up doesn't require so much poking of the baby with needles. That really sucks.
And if you care to see her oh so daintily eating her birthday cupcake, you can see them here.
Weaning from the bottle to the cup has begun in earnest. I'd intended to start earlier. Much earlier, but ... you know. Anyway, now that her 1st birthday is fast approaching I decided that I needed to start the weaning process ASAP. Especially since I originally wanted her to be completely weaned by her birthday. I don't know that that's going to happen now, but I'd still like to have her well on her way to freedom from the baby bottle.
I see in both our near futures an intense battle and probably some tears.
We spent all day yesterday 'traveling.' Which means we spent all f-ing day in Atlanta. Here's Lucy making herself at home by spreading her toys all over the floor at one of the various gates.
And here's me exhausted! (And still hours away from a flight out of there.)
Tomorrow Joe and I are flying out to AZ to spend two weeks with my family. This, however, presented a problem since we were certainly not going to fly across country with our cats, and two weeks is far too long to just have someone come by daily and give them food. Our cats are needy, social creatures. They need to be petted and loved in addition to being fed. For these same reasons I wasn't crazy about boarding them.
So last weekend, while Joe's parents were here visiting, Joe's dad, Joe, offered to meet us halfway between our houses (over 180 miles - about 290kms - for each of us) and take our cats. How awesome is that?! I don't think many people volunteer to cross state lines just to pick up your cats. My family-in-law is the best.
Anyway, yesterday we gathered the kid and the cats, and headed out to Hazelton, PA.
It was a long drive and Lucy fell asleep for a while.
... and Lucy got to hang out with her Papa Joe and Auntie D for a bit.
We finally had to say good-bye to the kitties and head home. Now that Lucy is in a forward facing car seat, I can sneak a look at her from my visor mirror. I did so on the way home, and caught this:
In case you didn't know, eleven 7-11's around the US were converted into Kwik-E-Mart's in celebration (or whatever) of The Simpsons Movie coming out at the end of July. One of those was in Bladensburg, MD (just outside DC), and only about 15 miles away from me! WooHoo! This is definitely one of the only times I was glad to live in the area I do since only a few 7-11's were converted, and they were in major cities.
Anyhoo, since I have been watching The Simpsons since age 9 - when the first season started - I've always want to go to Springfield. But of course, since it's a cartoon, I knew it was never going to be.
UNTIL NOW!!! (Sorta)
Let's take a tour of the Bladensburg Kwik-E-Mart, shall we? Here are a few shots of the building's exterior.
Moving indoors, we run into a few familiar faces. There's Apu guarding the magazines!
And Homer. Eating, of course.
And little Ralphy.
Ralphy's dad, Chief Wiggum was there as well, hangin' by the Squishee machine, but we had our hands full so I didn't get a photo of him. =[
I did happen upon Jasper in the freezer, though!
While there, we got ourselves some Squishees and few cans of Buzz Cola. We got there kind of late, though, and the Krusty O's were totally gone. They are apparently also selling copies of Radioactive Man (according to some random dude we talked to outside), and if I don't get a copy, I just might die.
Anyway, here a few other items of interest from inside the Kwik-E-Mart. Enjoy!
Today has been a virtual roller coaster! It's 1:45 pm, I'm still un-showered, and I'm so exhausted that I could go to bed for the rest of the day and night.
Lowlight - While cleaning my toilet in preparation for a friend coming to visit, a nut on the bottom of the toilet's tank comes loose and starts leaking water all over the floor! When I tried to tighten it back up, I moved the bolt it was attached to and only made it leak more water, even faster. So I let it be, soaked up the spilled (and still spilling, though more slowly) water with about 14 towels, set a pot under the drip, and called my apartment office to let them know that my bathroom was flooding - slowly, but surely. Oh, and I turned off the water to the tank (or cistern, as I was corrected by Joe) so as not to exacerbate my flooding issue. The woman in the office said she'd send someone over. Fine.
Highlight - Lucille woke up after a 2 hour nap (awesome!), and she was in an absolutely angelic mood. She was all smiles, and giggles, and adorable bed-head. She didn't fuss when I changed her (a true rarity these days!), and she squealed with delight when I sat on the floor rolling a soccer ball back and forth with her. Those few moments exemplify exactly why I love being able to stay home with my daughter, and why I chose to do so. I didn't only want to avoid someone I didn't even know possibly neglecting or abusing my child, I wanted to be there for all her smiles.
Highlight - After nearly two hours, no one had come to fix my still-dripping toilet. I decided to take matters into my own hands, and armed with some tool with a name that I can't think of, I fixed that goddamned leaky toilet! All by myself, too! OK, so it wasn't brain surgery, but for someone like me (virtually retarded in the ways of plumbing), it was still quite a feat. I was proud. I still am.
Lowlight - For absolutely no reason at all, Miss Lucille's mood went from angelic to demonic at light speed. Before I knew what happened, she was screaming at the the top of her lungs, crying, and flinging herself about the living room (and when I say 'flinging herself about,' I mean rolling back and forth across the living room floor quickly, and oh-so-dramatically while flailing her itty-bitty arms all around, and kicking the air, floor, cat, and anything else that got in her way with her adorably chubby, yet powerful little legs. Or, to put it succinctly, throwing a fit!)
I finally managed to get Lucy half-way settled down/distracted, but my bathroom is still only partially cleaned, I'm not even showered, and I. DON'T. CARE. Today has been nothing but extremes. The Joys/Terrors of Motherhood. Quite frankly, it's too much for me for one day, and I'm pooped!
